Bunion and Treatment
I have a large red bump on the side and at the base of my big toe that’s becoming more prominent. My dress shoes are harder to wear and the bump is very sensitive. What is this and what can I do about it?
You have a bunion. This problem often stems from an abnormal flexing of the foot causing the metatarsal bone to protrude — i.e. the bump. Anti-inflammatory medications, injections and prescription arch supports called orthotics may help but are unable to fully correct this problem. Final treatment consists of surgery to reposition the metatarsal back into the correct alignment. Walking is normally permitted directly after surgery with a removable cast. After about eight weeks, normal activities can be resumed.
