Genital herpes or herpes simplex 2
I am 24 years old and was recently diagnosed with genital herpes. I have had only two sexual partners in my life. How could this have happened?
Genital herpes or herpes simplex 2 (HSV2) is an epidemic sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 virus remains in your body for life. Recurrent infections vary in severity, frequency and duration. Symptoms should be treated as early as possible to decrease the duration of the outbreak. If symptoms occur frequently, suppressive therapy with antiviral medications is indicated. You are contagious during an outbreak and 1-2 days before. Avoidance, followed by condoms, are the best ways to prevent transmission of herpes during this time. Also, this may impact future pregnancies. Most obstetricians recommend delivering a mother with an active herpes outbreak by cesarean.
