How common is cardiovascular disease among women?
Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly 500,000 women every year. More than twice as many women die of heart disease and stroke as from all forms of cancer. One question that is frequently asked is whether hormone replacement therapy helps. This complex area continues to evolve as we strive to achieve greater understanding of women’s cardiac pathology. At this time, each woman should discuss her own specific case with her doctor to determine her own risk/benefit profile for hormone replacement therapy. Large studies are ongoing to address the many questions surrounding the role of hormone replacement therapy as it relates to women’s cardiac health.
