Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

I am having a problem with my husband’s snoring. He wakes me up all night, and then I hear him stop breathing. Is this serious?

One of the most common sleep disorders is snoring. Snoring can be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This is a condition that occurs when a person’s airway blocks the airflow to the lungs. If this happens for a prolonged period of time (a few seconds) it sounds as though a person has “stopped breathing,” as you describe with your husband. OSA (if left untreated) can lead to high blood pressure, respiratory and heart problems, obesity, and chronic fatigue. OSA can be treated medically or surgically.
