What is Encephalitis ?
What is encephalitis? Encephalitis is a viral infection, or an inflammation, of the brain. The viral infection that causes encephalitis may be the primary cause or a secondary complication. Viruses that cause primary encephalitis may be epidemic, such as polio, or sporadic, such as herpes simplex, varicella zoster, or mumps. Secondary encephalitis is usually a complication of a viral infection. Examples of secondary encephalitis include encephalitis that follows the measles, chickenpox, rubella, or smallpox vaccination, and/or many other less defined viral infections Continue reading
Fatigue and Stress
Could my fatigue be more than just stress?
Some common symptoms like fatigue may be caused by more serious problems such as underactive thyroid. Early on underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause a person to feel chronically tired and sensitive to cold. Later, one might notice headache and weight gain even though appetite actually decreases. Other common symptoms include depressed mood, sleep apnea and dry skin. Women may notice heavy periods as well. If you are noticing a combination of these feelings, have them checked out with your primary care physician.
Can girls in junior high or high school have PCOS and should they be treated?
The answer is yes and yes! PCOS is a gene-tic condition; therefore, women can have it from birth. It usually does not show up until the time of puberty. PCOS can be a cause of weight gain and/or irregular periods during these years. I certainly recommend treatment at an early age. I believe that potential complications may be prevented when girls are treated early. Using insulin-lowering medications and following a proper nutrition program can treat most of the symptoms of PCOS. Putting teen-agers on oral contraceptives may control bleeding but does not treat the syndrome and possibly may make it worse
As I age, I’ve noticed my breasts have lost shape and volume. What can be done for this?
As we age, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight gain and the force of gravity take effect on our body. As skin loses elasticity, the breasts can lose shape and begin to sag. Having a breast lift can reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin from beneath the breast and raising the areola to a higher position. If your breasts are small or have lost volume, implants can also be inserted in conjunction with a breast lift to increase both firmness and size. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not be as long-lasting in heavy breasts. If you’re still considering childbearing, you might want to postpone a breast lift to achieve best results.
Women and heart disease
Women and heart disease
Here’s what you can do now to avoid heart trouble later
( 1993 )
If you’re like many women, you don’t worry much about heart disease. The thought of developing breast cancer may concern you more. But heart disease claims five times as many female lives as cancer of the breast. And of the more than 520,000 Americans who die from heart attacks each year, close to half are women.
On average, women develop heart problems seven or eight years later in life than men. One in nine women aged 45 to 64 has some form of cardiovascular disease. By the age of 65, the number climbs to one in three.

Hormone replacement therapy
(1997)
You’re relieved that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. And you’re comforted by the fact that it cuts your risks linked to cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis in half. But how do you get these benefits without the side effects?
As many as two-thirds of women who start HRT stop within two years. One main reason they stop is because of side effects, particularly the irregular bleeding that can last anywhere from a few months to a few years.
So how do you reap the benefits of HRT and bypass the side effects? Customize. HRT comes in a variety of doses, regimens and preparations designed to make you more comfortable with your therapy while gaining long-term benefits. Continue reading
