Can girls in junior high or high school have PCOS and should they be treated?

pcos

The answer is yes and yes! PCOS is a gene-tic condition; therefore, women can have it from birth. It usually does not show up until the time of puberty. PCOS can be a cause of weight gain and/or irregular periods during these years. I certainly recommend treatment at an early age. I believe that potential complications may be prevented when girls are treated early. Using insulin-lowering medications and following a proper nutrition program can treat most of the symptoms of PCOS. Putting teen-agers on oral contraceptives may control bleeding but does not treat the syndrome and possibly may make it worse
