-What are cavernous hemangiomas?-
A hemangioma is a benign (noncancerous) growth or tumor that originates from blood vessel tissue. Cavernous (from the word cavern or cave) refers to hemangiomas comprised predominantly of dilated blood vessels that may appear on the surface of the skin as a red-blue spongy mass of tissue filled with blood.
Such vascular tumors are fairly common in the skin during early life. Many of them disappear spontaneously as the child gets older, but others may warrant treatment such as laser therapy. Hemangioma also may occur in organs such as the liver, spleen or pancreas.
